Whether for fun or fitness, 6v6 soccer is an excellent way to get the heart rate up and have some fun. Compared to a 11v11 game, 6v6 soccer follows the majority of the same rules but with a much smaller field and net. The game’s overall dynamic, however, can sometimes be different as each player gets more time on the field and with the ball, allowing everyone to feel included in the game. Whether you are brand new to the game or experienced, here are some tips to make the most out of each game you play.

Checking In and Out

One area where a lot of people tend to lose possession is in receiving the ball. One way to improve in this area is by checking out and into the ball. Although it sounds like a lot of work, it is easy to do and incorporate into games. Checking in and out of the ball means running away from your teammate with the ball (check-out), then quickly running towards open space near your teammate (check-in). This allows you to draw the defender away and will create open space for you to receive a pass. This also allows you to maintain control of the ball and move forward with the ball and make a play for your team to act on.

Conserving Your Energy in Soccer

Another area where people tend to have a lot of difficulty is maintaining a certain level of endurance to keep up with the game’s play. Although endurance is something you build over time, there are some strategies to conserve your energy throughout the game. One way to preserve your energy is to drink lots of water leading up to and during your game. Energy loss is one of many symptoms of dehydration, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout your day.

Another tip to conserve your energy is don’t waste your energy when it’s not necessary. This means only using the energy you have saved up to support your team offensively and defensively. Don’t bother over-exerting yourself for balls and passes that are too far for you to reach. Instead of chasing the ball, recover and regain your position on the field for a few seconds. The more you do this, the more energy you’ll have saved up for a potential scoring opportunity for your team.

Jumping into the Ball

The last tip for making the most out of each game is not jumping in when defending. Not only is it very easy for the opposing team to get around you, but it also makes it harder for you to get back and help your team. It also doesn’t help conserve your energy, so it is best to avoid it. Instead of jumping in, close down the space between you and the ball, but leave an arm’s length between you and the player. From this position, stay on your toes, so you are ready to move when the player or ball moves. This allows you to move quickly and take possession as you are more prepared to move in any direction.
