The Dodgeball tournament relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate unsportsmanlike conduct from the football field. Actions such as taunting opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional infractions, or other “win-at-all costs” behaviour are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players.
At the end of each game, a spirit score is to be awarded to the opposing team on a scale from 1 to 10. The team as a whole should have input on what spirit score should be awarded to the other team. At the end of the tournament, there will be a spirit trophy and prizes awarded to the team with the highest spirit average. All teams should try to follow the guidelines set out below in order to keep the system equal for everyone.
Spirit rating = 10
The other team was a great team and we really enjoyed playing against them. They showed up on time and showed great sportsmanship throughout the game. During the game they played by the rules, but if we had a dispute they were open to discuss the rules. This was one of the best spirited teams we have played against, and we are really looking forward to play against them again.
Spirit rating = 8
The other team was a fun team and we enjoyed playing against most of their players. They showed up on time and showed decent sportsmanship throughout the game. During the game they generally played by the rules, but if we had a dispute they were pretty receptive to discuss the rules. Not a bad team to play against.
Spirit rating = 6
The other team was an ok team and we enjoyed playing against only a few of their players. They showed up late and/or showed poor sportsmanship throughout the game. During the game they really didn’t play by the rules, and really didn’t want to learn the rules. The captains should discuss what happened so it doesn’t happen again. This wasn’t a fun game, and our captain will add a brief comment to the score submission explaining the low spirit score.
Spirit rating = 4
The other team was not fun to play against and we did not enjoy playing against any of their players. They showed up very late and/or showed very poor sportsmanship throughout the game. During the game they didn’t play by the rules, and didn’t want to learn the rules. The captains should discuss what happened so it doesn’t happen again. This wasn’t a fun game, and our captain will explain what happened during the game in the score submission.
Spirit rating = 1
The other team was terrible to play against. We did not enjoy playing against any of their players. They showed up very late and/or showed horrible sportsmanship throughout the game. During the game, they were very negligent of the rules, and of the safety and enjoyment of our team. They had no desire to learn the rules. This is the least spirited team we have every played against. Our captain is going to send a report to the tournament convener explaining what happened during the game.
Any team that defaults a game (because they do not have enough players) will receive a 4 for spirit for the game that they defaulted and the non-defaulting team will not receive a spirit score (their spirit average will not be affected).
1. Start Time/Durations
- Games start right at the scheduled time. Please be at the location at least 15 minutes before your game in order to warm up prior to starting. Each time slot will be 20 minutes long and you will play as many games as you can in that set time. Games must finish at the scheduled time, regardless of the time they started, as there may be other games beginning after yours.
2. Number of Players/Substitutions
- Teams are made up of 6 players with a minimum of 2 women and 2 men.
- A team can play with a minimum of 4 people, as long as 2 of the players are women and 2 are men. In the event that one of the teams doesn’t meet the minimum player requirements to field a team, they default the match. However, the opposing team captain may waive the minimum player requirement AND have the results of the match COUNT towards the standings. Agreeing that the results of the match COUNT must be made clear prior to the start of play by the team captains. Agreeing to play does not infer that the match counts unless this is explicitly decided by the opposing team captain.
- Injured players may be subbed out mid-game as long as the minimum female and male requirements are still met.
3. Equipment
- Each game will use six 7″ rubber coated foam balls.
- The games will be played on an indoor court defined by the blue line.
- The playing area will be divided into two equal sections. Indoors, this is based on a blue center line.
4. Scoring the Game
- Players attempt to eliminate members of the opposing team by hitting them with the ball. A ball is “live” until it hits the floor, wall or other contruct like a basketball net. At this point, the ball becomes “dead”. If a player is hit with any ball that has not yet touched the floor or wall, that player is ‘out’.
- If the ball hits two players before it hits the floor or wall, both players are ‘out’.
- Play continues until one entire team is eliminated. At that point, the game is over and the winning team is awarded one point.
- Balls are then reset 10 feet back from the centerline and play resumes when ‘READY, SET, DODGEBALL!’ is shouted again.
- If a game is still being played when time expires (i.e. when the whistle blows), the team with the most live players on the court at that time will win the game. A minimum of two players from either team must be eliminated in order for the partial game to count.
- The team to win the majority of the games within the 20 minute time frame wins the match.
- Pool play matches can end in a tie.
- 2 points are awarded for a match win, 1 for a tie, 0 for a loss.
- If there is an odd number of games played, pool play rankings will be determined by winning percentage
- If two teams have the same number of points at the end of pool play, the tiebreaker is as follows:
- head to head. If the two teams tied played each other, the winner of the game places higher
- point differentials, counting only games against common opponents
- points scored, counting games against all common opponents
- points against, counting games against all common opponents
- spirit score average
- flip a coin
- If three teams have the same number of points at the end of pool play, the tiebreaker is as follows:
- head to head. (If the three teams tied did not all play each other, skip to e)
- point differentials, counting only games against tied opponents
- points scored, counting games against all tied opponents
- points against, counting games against all tied opponents
- point differentials, counting only games against common opponents
- points scored, counting games against all common opponents
- points against, counting games against all common opponents
- spirit score average
- flip a coin
- Playoff matches are the best 2 out 3 games. The Championship playoff match is the best 3 out of 5 games (time permitting).
5. Start of Play & General Rules
- Sides will be decided by the “rock, paper, scissors” game by the captains. The winning team gets their choice of ends.
- Teams will switch sides after each game.
- The game begins with 3 dodgeballs placed 10 feet back from the centre line on each half court (6 balls total). They should be evenly spread on either side of the court. All players must then take a position behind their out of bounds line, with both feet behind it (no running starts).
At the call of ‘READY, SET, DODGEBALL!’, players will then rush to the balls placed 10 feet off the centre line to start the game. - The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them ‘out’. This is done by:
- Hitting an opposing player with a thrown ball (not kicked) below the shoulders! An opponent that is hit (blindsided) in the head/neck is NOT eliminated, but the person who threw the ‘head/neck shot’, accidentally or not, IS eliminated. If the player tries to catch the ball, or ducks into it in an attempt to avoid it and is hit in the head or neck, the player is out, not the thrower. If a player sees a ball coming at their head and tries to block it out of defense, neither the thrower nor the catcher is eliminated.
- Catching a ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground, wall or ceiling (i.e.) simply before the ball is “dead”.
- Make sure that the player that has been hit by a ball raises their hand as they leave the court in order for the opponents know not to hit them.
- The court lines represent the inbounds area and players must stay inside these. If any part of a live player touches a boundary line they are rendered out. If a ball goes out of this area, you must exit through the back, retrieve the ball and re-enter through the back again. While out-of-bounds, you cannot get hit or throw a ball. You must carry the balls back into the playing area. You cannot cross the center line to retrieve balls on the other team’s out-of-bounds area.
6. Re-Entry
- If a defender catches a ‘live’ thrown ball, the thrower is out and one player then returns to the defender’s side. The defender that catches a “live” thrown ball must have both feet inbounds when the ball is caught. The outside court perimeter line (blue line for St. John Kilmarnock School) is considered part of the court of play or inbounds area. If ANY part of the foot, or other body contact point, is beyond the inside edge of the perimeter line, the ball is considered caught outside of the line.
- The next player back in the game must be a substitute of the same sex as the first player who was ruled as ‘out’ during match play. If a team has no subs, then the first person out is the first person back in.
7. Throwing the Balls & Eliminating Players
- Players can throw a ball however they like (but they can’t squeeze all of the air out of it) as long as they are on their own side of the court.
- Players must throw any acquired balls within 10 seconds of receiving the ball.
- Teams are not allowed to stockpile balls on their side of court.
- Players can use an acquired ball to deflect or block an oncoming ball. If the deflected ball hits a teammate or the person with the ball (anywhere on the boding including the player’s head) before it hits the ground/wall, then the player that was hit is eliminated. If the ball you are holding is knocked out of your hands by an incoming ball, then you are eliminated.
- If a ball rebounds off of a player from an unsuccessful catch, a hit off of their body or a deflection by another ball, and is caught by a teammate before it becomes dead, then the thrower is out. The catching team can also return a player.
- If the player catches the deflected ball out-of-bounds, then the player is eliminated.
- A player may lean over the center line to retrieve a ball, but can not touch any part of the opponent’s court. If a player accidentally or intentionally touches the court on their opponent’s half, then they are out of that game.
- Players may also lean over the sidelines to retrieve a ball out-of-bounds, but if they are hit while doing so, they are eliminated from the game.
- Players cannot hide in areas where they are concealed or partially concealed from being hit.
- A ball is dead as soon as it hits the floor, ground, wall, ceiling or any object attached to the ceiling (i.e. basketball net).
- Players are NOT eliminated after being hit by a dead ball. All other balls are considered ‘live’.
- In order to keep the game fun for all, it is everyone’s responsibility to make a fair and honest call as to whether or not they were hit.
- Remember, it’s just a friendly dodgeball game/tournament, highly competitive play is not encouraged.
8. Abuse/Alcohol Policy:
- Any abuse, whether it be physical, sexual or mental is not acceptable in any manner. If this kind of abuse is reported, the player or team will receive a verbal warning. If a second incident occurs the player or team will be asked to leave the league or tournament without refund. Teams are responsible for other teammates actions. As a teammate, please encourage good sportsmanship at all times. Perpetual Motion Sports & Entertainment Inc. reserves the right to eject a player or team without a warning and without a refund. The Guelph Dodgeball Tournament is to be enjoyable and fun for everyone, lets keep it that way.
- Alcohol and smoking is not permitted at any game or event, offenders will be asked to leave the league without refund. Playing while intoxicated is prohibited.
Thank you for organizing a team for the tournament. Without you, tournaments would not be possible. Now that the hard part is over, there are a couple of small things we ask that you do throughout the tournament:
1. Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes early so that you can be present for the captains’ meeting, which generally takes place 10 minutes before the start of the event. At this meeting, you will receive a black clipboard which contains a schedule, a copy of the rules and enough game sheets for the day.
2. Make sure that all of your players have read the rules and know about any information that may have been passed along during the meeting. This is so that all players are on the same page throughout the day.
3. After every game, please bring your game sheet from the previous match over to the head table so that we can update the standings.
4. At the end of the day, please return any equipment you have been given, as well as the black clipboard you received.
Thanks for helping this tournament run smoothly!
