The format of the tournament is as follows: players sign up as individuals, and in the process, pick the playing card that they would like to represent. Women choose to be Hearts or Diamonds, while the men choose Clubs or Spades. At the start of the tournament, all of the cards are shuffled and dealt, telling you which court you are playing on and who your teammates will be. After two games are played with these teams, each player will receive a one-hole punch on their playing card for every win they achieved. The cards are then reshuffled and dealt again, leading to completely different teams. By the end of the tournament, each player will have played ten games with five different teams. The man and woman who have amassed the most hole punches by the end of the day are declared the King and Queen of the Castle. Prizes are also awarded to the players who have the best costumes. So be sure to dress up, whether with body paint or by designing clothes.
In addition, throughout the day there will be a number of Joker points. The Joker of the tournament will add challenges to the team, such as having to wear oven mitts while playing or having to protect their team’s sand castle.
1. Player Requirements/Safety
- 4 players on the court – a minimum of 2 members of the same sex must be on the court at all times.
- Each player must sign a waiver before his/her first game.
- Should an injury occur, a first aid kit (ice packs, band aids and tensors) will be provided in every equipment bag.
2. Start Time
- The first set of games begins at 9:30 am. Please arrive at 9:00 to sign in and ensure that games start on time.
3. Scoring
- You will play 2 games against each of the 5 teams (10 games in total).
- Each game is played to 25 points, with rally point scoring (i.e. a point is scored on every serve). The game must be won by 2 points, with a 27 point cap. One point will be awarded for each game won.
4. Referees
- All games are self-officiated (no referees), therefore, teams are required to call their OWN violations and are expected to be honest and keep a high level of sportsmanship at all times.
- If you feel that your opponent is not being accountable, your team captain may politely intervene to discuss fouls called or uncalled. We rely on your spirit of sportsmanship and honesty to keep the matches pleasant for all. If there is a dispute, please re-serve the point.
5. Play
- A player may never block a serve.
- Lifting, scooping the ball and double hits are not permitted.
- A block is not counted as a hit.
- A ball may be volleyed over the net only if you are square to the direction of the ball.
- Maximum of 3 hits per side.
- If the ball lands on the line it is in.
- No “open-handed” tipping: players who contact the ball with one hand and are putting the ball over the net, must cleanly hit with the heel or palm of hand (a roll shot), with straight, locked fingers and a locked wrist (a cobra), knurled fingers (a camel toe), or with the back of the hand (locked wrist and locked fingers/knuckles). One-handed placement or redirection of the ball with the fingers (dink or open-handed tip) is a fault.
6. Player Rotations
- Rotate new players in before your team starts a new server. In 4’s divisions, you do not have to rotate your players around the court, but you must rotate your servers.
7. Playing the Ball
- Players may play the ball off any part of their body, including feet.
8. Contacting the Net and Center Line
- A player can not touch the net at any time during the game (if you touch the net, it is the other team’s ball). However, a player may cross the imaginary center line as long as they don’t interfere with the play or get in the way of the opposition.
9. Serving
- Net serves are allowed (the ball is allowed to contact the net on the serve).
- A server may serve the ball from anywhere along the baseline.
- A maximum of 5 serves per player. After 5 serves, the serving team rotates one position with the next player continuing the serve.
10. Weather Conditions
- In sunny or windy conditions, where one side of the court offers an advantage, teams will change sides after every 10 points scored.
- Games are played rain or shine (but no lightning), cancelled games are not rescheduled. Always show up to the game even if it’s raining as the weather can change very quickly. At the start of the game the captains are to make the decision if the games are to be cancelled. If lightning cancels any sets of games, the rest of the games are cancelled for the night.
- LIGHTNING POLICY: If thunder is heard within 30 seconds of seeing lightning, games will be postponed. All participants must leave the playing area and seek shelter in a building or an automobile. Never stand under trees, in an open field or under an umbrella. Games will resume 15 minutes after the thunder and lightning have moved away. If thunder and lightning are still present 15 minutes after, the game will be cancelled and the score counts as it was when the game was stopped. Halfway point of the game must be reached (13 points by one team) in order for the game to count towards the league standings.
11. Abuse/Alcohol:
- Any abuse, whether it be physical, sexual, or mental is not acceptable in any manner. If any of these types of abuse are reported, the player or team will receive a verbal warning. If a second incident occurs, the player or team will be asked to leave the league or tournament without refund. Teams are responsible for other teammates’ actions; as a teammate, please encourage good sportsmanship at all times. Perpetual Motion Sports & Entertainment Inc. reserves the right to eject a player or team without a warning and without a refund. The King of the Castle Tournament is to be enjoyable and fun for everyone, let’s keep it that way.
- Alcohol is not permitted at any game or event, offenders will be asked to leave the league without refund. Playing while intoxicated is also prohibited.
Please note that we will be using Recreational 6’s Rules for the Recreational/Intermediate 6’s Division for the King of the Castle Tournament.

How do I sign up?
You can sign up simply by clicking on the “Registration” tab.
Can I sign up with my friend?
Absolutely. However, each player must sign up individually. Remember that each player will be on different teams throughout the day, so while you may get to play on the same team as your friend (or against your friend), there is no guarantee that that will happen.
I missed registration deadline but I really want to play! What can I do?
After the registration deadline, there may still be some room in the tournament, so sign up, and we will let you know.
What is the rain and lightning policy?
The tournament runs rain or shine, provided that the fields are not closed. Large storms that occur at game time may cause a cancellation. If thunder is heard within 30 seconds of seeing lightning, games will be postponed. All participants must leave the playing area and seek shelter in a building or an automobile. Never stand under trees, in an open field or under an umbrella. Games will resume 15 minutes after the thunder and lightning have moved away. If thunder and lightning are still present 15 minutes after, the tournament may be cancelled.
What is the policy for getting contact information for another player?
We are not allowed to give out a player’s information, so if you would like to get a hold of another player, we can forward your email address to them.
What is the policy for getting substitute players for our team?
You are allowed to get substitutes for any round-robin game. However, for a player to be eligible to play in the playoffs, they must have played at least half of the round-robin games. This is to keep teams from adding ‘ringers’ to their team for the final games.
What is the minimum age requirement to play in Perpetual Motion tournaments?
Players must be of high school age to play in the leagues and tournaments, but to sign up as an individual, players must be out of high school.
Are there any after-tournament deals set up with restaurants or bars within the city?
Glad you asked. Absolutely. You can check out information about the post-tournament social here.
Are there prizes for winning?
Yes. At the end of each tournament, trophies and prizes are awarded to the King and Queen of each Division and the best dressed/most spirit player. Prizes include t-shirts, water bottles, hats, toques, and visors.
Are the games all at one location, or all over the place?
The games are all at one location, so you don’t have to worry about travelling during the day.
